Breathing is something we do every moment of our lives. Breathing is also affected by every moment of our lives. As life gets demanding or busy, we respond to thoughts, feelings and situations and the effect is seen instantly in the rhythm of our breath. Tensions creep in, responses that are often unconscious. Over time these tensions start to feel normal, even though they may interfere with the body’s natural breathing mechanism.
The Alexander Technique takes a distinctive approach to breathing. Rather than teaching breathing exercises or asking you to control the breath, it helps you become aware of the habits that may be getting in the way of your breath. As overall coordination improves and unnecessary tension is released, many people discover that breathing becomes easier, quieter and more responsive to what they are doing.
Students often report feeling calmer, more grounded and more present. Singers, speakers and performers may notice changes in vocal freedom and resonance. Others simply appreciate the feeling of having more space and ease in themselves.
The goal is not to have perfect breathing technique. It is to create the conditions in which breathing can take care of itself.
