Find a teacher

Finding the right teacher is the first step. Every teacher in our directory is a registered ATTSANZ member, trained to international standards across a minimum three-year programme.

Working with a teacher

What to know

Teachers work in different ways, and finding the right fit matters. Our teachers are all trained to apply the technique to any person or situation for improved coordination and wellbeing. Some have areas of particular interest and expertise.

All teachers offer face to face Individual Lessons which is the most common way of learning the technique I. There may also be the option of Group Classes G or Online Coaching O.

If you’re unsure what is right for you, reach out to a teacher directly – they’ll be happy to talk it through.

How lessons work

Alexander Technique lessons are primarily educational rather than therapeutic, though the therapeutic benefits are real and well documented. What that means in practice is that you’re not a patient being treated, but a student learning something that becomes genuinely yours to keep.

In a lesson your teacher will work with you through simple everyday activities or whatever skill you bring to explore. Using verbal direction and hands-on guidance they will help you notice how you’re using your body and where unnecessary tension has crept in. They use their hands to communicate directly with your nervous system, giving you the experience of easier, more coordinated movement. Lessons may also include tablework to help restore a more neutral resting tension of the musculature. Online coaching works differently, but many students find that they experience the benefits and make meaningful change.

Because our patterns are so deeply ingrained, most people find they need a series of lessons to make real lasting change. It could be as few as three, as many as twenty – or for some, indefinitely, simply because they enjoy the ongoing development.
